Day 1 - October 10th 2021

Today, October 10th 2021, marks 100 days until the 100 year anniversary of the Council for Exceptional Children. The celebration of this anniversary is a milestone in the history of special education. On behalf of NJCEC, this blog will be providing a daily fact about the history of special education to provide an outlook on where the field started and how far it has come. The Council for Exceptional Children was founded in 1922 by Elizabeth Farrell. CEC was founded with three goals in mind, to unite those concerned with the issue of special education, to promote the educational needs of “special children” rather than their identification, and to establish professional standards for teachers in the field of special education.
