Day 37 - Foundation of the Special Olympics

The Special Olympics originated in 1962 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver invited young people with intellectual disabilities to participate in a summer camp which she hosted in her backyard. This camp grew, leading to the first Special Olympics in 1968. Shriver believed that participation in athletics would give people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to grow and reach their full potential.
