Perkins School for the Blind, originally Perkins Institution for the Blind, was established in 1829 and is the oldest school for the blind in the United States. The school officially opened its doors in 1832 with Samuel Gridley Howe as the first director. In 1832 classes were taught in the basement of Howe’s father. In 1833 classes were moved to the home of Thomas Perkins, the vice president of the school. Perkins sold his house in 1838 and put the money towards a relocation of the school to a hotel in South Boston. The current campus was built in 1912 in Watertown, Massachusetts
