Day 69 - Closure of Willowbrook State Developmental Center

After the the Willowbrook Consent Judgement was issued, Willowbrook State Developmental Center was taken to court several more times based on the implementation of the Consent Judgement. One goal of the Consent Judgement (issued in 1973) was that the number of residents at the facility would be reduced from about 6,000 to under 250 by 1981. This did not prove possible, however Willowbrook officially closed in 1987. The closing of this facility is considered a milestone for the disabled community and advocates since the atrocities occurring at the institution officially ended and were condemned.
