Dr. Maria Montessori opened her first school on January 6, 1907 - 115 years ago today. The school was located in San Lorenzo, a poor, inner-city district in Rome. The center was called “Casa dei Bambini” which translates to “Children’s House.” Many had deemed the disadvantaged and previously unschooled children unteachable, but Montessori sought to create a quality learning environment. While it took some time, Montessori observed that the children absorbed knowledge from their surroundings. Through self-directed hands-on activities, the children learned skills such as meal preparation and cleaning. The learning activities that were developed using these observations are still largely used in Montessori schools today.
