Day 23 - Foundation of the Bradley Home

The Bradley hospital was founded in 1931. The hospital was named after Emma Bradley, the daughter of George and Helen Bradley. Resulting from encephalitis at the age of seven, Emma was left with multiple disabilities. Although Emma did not show significant improvement after eighteen years of treatment her parents wanted to help other children with disabilities. The Bradley’s saw the need for pediatric services - which were not yet available - and asked for their estate to be converted into a treatment facility for children. The hospital gave priority to poverty-stricken children and only billed families when they had the means to pay. The Bradley hospital was the first psychiatric hospital for children.
