Day 59 - William Tuke


Today marks the anniversary of death of William Tuke. Tuke was born in 1732 and died in 1822. Tuke is remembered as the founder of the York Retreat, an influential institution for the care of the “insane.” The York Retreat opened in 1796 and is known as a one of the early institutions which provided intelligent and humane care for people with developmental disabilities.
